Y&G Delegation Inspiring Positive Change
The Newport Corona Del Mar delegation is using the tools they have learned in Y&G to find a solution to local problems and inspire positive change within their community.
When the Eastbluff community passed new parking restrictions on the Corona del Mar High School perimeter without input from parents or students, Y&G delegates decided to take matters in to their own hands.
Last week nearly 100 NCDM delegates filled the front rows of the Newport Beach City Council meeting to discuss the negative effects of these restrictions on students. Speaking publicly to dozens of city council members and concerned residents, delegates addressed how they could compromise by becoming better neighbors from small acts such as picking up trash to consistently using the crosswalks.
“The model government in which we participate is constantly teaching us about the art of compromise, and it is that same art I believe is needed to resolve this very issue,” said Sydney Custer, a high school junior and Y&G delegate.
At the second reading of the resolution at the September 13th city council meeting, all six council members were persuaded to lift the parking restriction.
